Google may have canceled the Home Max, but this great deal lives on

You can really hear and feel the bass when beats are pounding on a track, but we recommend staying under level 7 volume because the audio quality becomes strained at higher volumes. Fortunately, you can tweak the bass and treble accordingly via the accompanying Google Home app. We’ve certainly experienced better audio quality with smart speakers such as the Apple HomePod and Sonos One, but the Nest Hub Max isn’t too shabby. It sits nicely between the Google Home and Google Home Max speakers in terms of audio quality. Another recent introduction to Google Assistant is the ability to pause media content, like YouTube videos or songs in Pandora, using the new Quick Gestures function.
To remove the photo, say “Hey Google, remove this photo” and follow the prompts. Available albums include auto-selected albums like “Recent highlights,” your private Google Photos albums, and your shared albums that have a name. Tap Select people & pets tap the ones you want to include Confirm.

The walnut skin and the carbon metal base look really great together. To install an aftermarket base, first unplug the power adapter from the speaker. Install the aftermarket base by lining up the hole for the power adapter with the back of the speaker.
No more waving your cell phone randomly around the room for five minutes as with Sonos Trueplay. To expand beyond that, create a new Live Album and enable it in the Photo frame settings. Google launched the Nest Audio last fall, serving as a replacement to both the original Google Home and the oversized Home Max. It's one of the best speakers you can buy for under $100, but it's not perfect.

That’s been slowly getting better , but that’s not an issue at all with the Google Home Max. Setting it up is as easy as plugging it in and opening up the Google Home app. It’s very similar to how easy Sonos makes setting up with their app. The Google Home app walks you through step-by-step how to connect the speaker to your wireless router and get it ready for streaming. You should know that WiFi is mandatory as there is no ethernet input if you want to connect it directly to a modem.
Both speakers have a similarly energetic sound profile, but the Bose just can't match the Max's volume levels without distorting, even at only two-thirds of maximum. The Google speaker did sound a little scratchy at 100 per cent, so I backed it off to 90 per cent for most playback, which was still plenty loud for our 11-by-20-foot listening room. In my comparison listening tests, Google's big speaker beat the Bose handily and matched the Sonos in many areas, with a powerful, spacious sound that fills a room well for a single speaker. I still prefer the Sonos by a nose overall, since it sounded less edgy with some styles of music, but both are excellent for this type of speaker and earned the same rating for sound quality. Pixel Call Assist is the best thing about the Pixel 7
The underlying Google Assistant experience is intact and largely unchanged from before. When it’s on standby, it can be set to rotate curated photos or images from recent highlights in your Google Photos catalog. If we tap anywhere on the screen, we can scroll through calendar reminders, albums in our Google Play Music collection, top stores, and more. Since it’s tied to our Google account, it provides relevant search details, like those pertaining to our commute, upcoming flight, or the weather in our area.
On the top is a touch-sensitive section for playback and volume. At higher volumes, the speaker had trouble picking up the hotword. The Google Home Max has an acoustically transparent fabric that won’t get in the way of your music. The small lights behind the fabric light up when you speak or adjust playback.

Thanks to the addition of a front-facing camera, the Nest Hub Max essentially functions as a Nest Cam, providing peace of mind when you’re away from home. Tapping into the live feed using the Google Home app for Android, we’re given the option for two-way communication. For those worried about privacy, there’s a green LED that glows next to the camera to indicate it’s being accessed remotely, as well as a pop-up notification that appears on-screen. Now, if you’re paranoid that someone is watching you while at home, there’s even switch on the back that effectively turns off the microphone and camera. Yes, the Google Home Max was meant to satisfy those cravings, but the Google Nest Hub Max can certainly fill the void, too. The device is armed with dual 10-watt tweeters and a 30-watt woofer, allowing for substantially more power and making the Nest Hub Max perfect for all sorts of music listening.
Yes, you can pair two Max speakers, but the price is steep and in our tests, it didn't perform well as a pair. Two Sonos One speakers, meanwhile, pair very well, cost the same a single Max, and next year Sonos will add Google Assistant too . If I had to choose straight-up between a single Max and a pair of Sonos Ones in stereo mode, I'd take the Sonos speakers for their improved soundstage. The slight emphasis in the lower frequencies will probably be a positive for most people because of its subtlety. It doesn’t overpower the mids at all and when paired with how loud this thing can get, so it’s perfect for powering your parties.
If you mainly want background music, you should spend half as much on the Sonos One. Ty Pendlebury is a journalism graduate of RMIT Melbourne, and has worked at CNET since 2006. It wasn't possible to test this in Google's demo area, but it certainly fits in with Google's theme of more closely marrying its hardware and software features together. The Google Home Mini is powered by micro-USB, not USB-C (likely because it doesn't charge on its own) and there's a mute switch along the slightly rubberized bottom. Google says it paid particular attention to the fabric, so that it wouldn't interfere with the speaker's acoustics and muffle the sound. Given the Nest Hub Max was created with automation in mind, it’s also great at accessing and controlling a wealth of connected smart gadgets. The conveniences that Google Assistant provides are endless — we can even order a pizza from Domino’s Pizza, thanks to the voice-guided instructions.
Without a wired input, it's impossible to use the Nest Audio with a turntable or your entertainment system. If you've been dying to add some speakers to your house but you're hesitant to switch to wireless, today's you're lucky day. You can upgrade your audio experience with a Google Home Max for just $150. Normally, if you place a speaker in the corner the low end sounds amplified, almost like putting your smartphone in a cup. But the Google Home Max self-adjusts in order to make sure the sound stays consistent.
